CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
Everyone wants soft, beautiful skin. Unfortunately, our skin is subject to numerous experiences that leave it less than perfect such as, wrinkled and sun damaged skin, genetics, and environment.
Since the 1990s, CO2 laser resurfacing has long been the gold standard for a safe and effective anti-aging treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, saggy, or lax skin, sun damage, scars, uneven pigmentation and large pores.
With the traditional CO2 laser there is a need for greater anesthesia, risk of scarring, pigment issues and lengthy recovery periods after the procedure that includes weeping and crusting of the skin. There is also a potential for prolonged facial redness that can last three months or more, hypopigmentation or lightening of skin color, and the potential for infection which can lead to scarring. Nurse Practitioner in Zest of beauty Clinic uses a new breed of Fractional CO2 technology (Matrix, Sandstone DOT Therapy) that has been designed to overcome all of these drawbacks. This new treatment is known as Fractional CO2 resurfacing. This technology treats zones of skin and leaves other sections in between undamaged which promotes the rapid healing and minimal downtime that has been a trademark of the fractional technologies. Fractional laser delivery means that some adjacent areas have untouched stem cells thereby the healing is much faster.
Instead of treating the whole skin surface and causing one large, red, oozing surface like the CO2 laser, the Fractional Repair treatment only heats “columns” of tissue and leaves most other areas of healthy skin intact. Because of this, Fractional Repair has an ongoing healing and rebuilding process that is more subtle, with significantly less downtime, adverse effects and recovery compared to traditional CO2 lasers.
The benefits of Fractional Resurfacing:
- Better results compared to non-ablative treatments
- Minimal downtime
- Safe and effective for all skin surface areas
- Promotes tissue contraction and skin tightening
- Your appearance continues to improve over a period of up to six months
- Rare hypopigmentation (pigment loss)
How is my treatment performed?
Treatments are usually in one to two sessions depending on skin condition (photaging) or if the procedure is for acne scars. Topical anesthesia is applied to the areas being lasered for about an hour prior. The provider scans the skin being treated with the Fractional handpiece scanner in a computer-controlled pattern. This allows the physician to treat small areas of skin while leaving the surrounded areas intact.
What can I expect after treatment?
After your treatment is completed you will feel like you have a slight sun burn for a few hours and this will subside. You will be instructed to keep your face covered with Aquaphor ointment and be seen the following day in the office. Depending on the depth and number of passes used by your provider the first 2 – 3 days following your treatment will most likely be redness, swelling, and possibly some crusting or oozing. Most patients rest the first few days before they return to normal activities and slightly longer if they had more aggressive resurfacing. Any mild or moderate redness can last from 1-2 weeks after which you can have some “pinkness” up to 6 weeks which can easily be covered with make-up, however, most patients like the “pink” look. Treatments are well-tolerated because the laser energy is placed deep in the dermis, where there are less pain receptors. What patients like the most about Fractional CO2 resurfacing is that the recovery time is shortened, there is less chance of having complications and the results last longer.
